About
The two talented and bright brothers in the photo are 10-year-old Hovak and 7-year-old Grigor. They have many interests: they attend music school — Hovak studies piano and violin, and Grigor plays the violin. They love planting flowers together, cooking delicious meals, and building with LEGO and construction sets. Yet at times, a severe illness prevents them from living a full and carefree life.
Hovak was diagnosed with hereditary angioedema at the age of 7, and Grigor at just 3 years old. This is a rare condition that causes recurrent episodes of severe swelling. In their case, the attacks affect the hands, feet, face, as well as the gastrointestinal tract and airways. Swelling in the throat area can lead to airway narrowing and serious breathing difficulties.
Attacks may be triggered by minor injuries, insect bites, viral infections, or sometimes occur without any clear cause. They can last for several days, and if the airways or gastrointestinal system are involved, the child’s life may be at serious risk without immediate treatment.
Berinert is the only medication that works quickly and effectively in such situations. However, it is extremely expensive and nearly unavailable in Armenia, as it must mostly be purchased from abroad. In its absence, plasma is used, but it acts more slowly and is not always effective.
Each child needs around five doses per year. At this moment, six doses of Berinert are urgently needed for both children, with a total cost of 2,360,000 AMD.
The absence of this medication at a critical moment can be fatal. With timely access to it, the boys can continue to live active, fulfilling lives.
Let us come together to ensure that Hovak and Grigor have access to this life-saving medication and can continue enjoying their childhood.
