Alla, who spent 18 years serving in the Armenian army, single-handedly raised her two sons, Samvel and Arsen, through great difficulties. Following the patriotic example of their mother, both sons became soldiers—one enlisted, the other a contract soldier.

On September 19, Arsen, upon hearing news of the war, walked several dozen kilometers from Martakert to reach the frontlines. But while he was rushing to defend his homeland, Samvel had already fallen.

Arsen learned of his brother’s death while fighting for his life on the battlefield. Receiving the devastating news, Arsen stayed in the fight and fought until his last breath. He died on September 20.

Left alone in the emptying hospitals of Artsakh, Alla searched every corner for her sons, but they were gone. She received news of Samvel’s death, and the next day—Arsen’s.

The war took everything from Alla. Today, she is alone.
