Problem & Solution
Once abundant, the Red Deer of Armenia was considered locally extinct in the 1960s due to poaching and habitat destruction. However, the recent efforts of WWF-Armenia and the Ministry of Environment of Armenia are concentrated on restoring the population by breeding Red Deer in a Breeding Center and releasing them into the wild. In August 2024, 10 individuals are set to be released, but without a tracking system, they will be vulnerable to predators, poaching, and other threats.
GPS collars can help! By tracking the deer's location, WWF-Armenia can ensure their safety and monitor their progress as they adapt to their new environment. The Red Deer reintroduction project is more than just about conservation. It's also about economic development and social change.
The red deer population plays a vital role in seed dispersal and nutrient cycling. Our program is ongoing, and it is hoped that the red deer will once again become a common sight in the Armenian forests. The project has created jobs for local people and transformed the restoration areas into tourist hotspots. It has also helped to raise awareness about the importance of protecting Armenia's natural heritage.
